Garmin nüvi 285W/285WT

This sleek widescreen navigation unit delivers you there with preloaded maps and turn-by-turn directions and even reads out the street names. At the same time as navigating, it can provide you with real-time local weather, traffic updates, gas prices, stock rates, movie times, news and local events while you drive. The Garmin Nuvi 285WT provides complete maps for all of North America and the useful Text-to-Speech feature gives you turn-by-turn spoken directions with the actual names of streets (e.g. “turn left in 80 feet at Hanover Drive”, rather than just “turn left in 80 feet”). Along with rest of the nüvi 205 range, this portable navigation is affordable and child’s play to use.
Looking to Buy a Garmin Nuvi 285WT?
I have personally owned three of the three main brands of GPS navigators. I can confidently say that Garmin consistently has the most accurate maps. I drive hundreds of miles per week and have yet to find an address that the Garmin Nuvi 285WT can’t find. Previous models of Mio and Nextar that were often guidance or map problems.
The 4.3″ screen on this unit is a good mid-sized screen for an average size car without looming over the dash like the new 5″ and 7″ gps navigators, and is still an improvement over the 3.5″ screens. This particular Garmin Nuvi includes the MSN traffic receiver and nine months free trial of their useful MSN Direct service.
There are a good variety of voices included, but a quick trip to the Garmin website will let update the Garmin Nuvi 285WT with hundreds more, male, female and even animal and cartoon character!
The GPS satellite lock on is very quick – once you have completed the initial setup, on future powerups it pinpoints your location almost instantly.

There are a lot of models in the Garmin Nuvi range – see here for the entire range with feature description. But the model most suited to my needs and budget has to be the Garmin Nuvi 285WT – the spoken street names, Bluetooth, clear, uncluttered screen and affordable price (thanks Amazon!) are the features that appeal to me most, and the bonus of animated icons and customisation of voices and graphics via the fast and simple to use Garmin website are excellent extras.
